Instagram Story Settings

This work involved self-motivated leadership to improve product quality, create scalable information architecture and ship a durable fix.

How might we help people feel
in control of their experience?

The problem

Our Story permissions were a mess and I saw an opportunity to take matters into my own hands. This settings screen had been added to haphazardly over the years and there was no rhyme or reason to the information architecture.

Before

My work

  • I put together a proposal to redesign the settings with a clear IA, using proper terminology and a consistent language structure to make sure that people know what they can control on this screen.

  • I advocated for engineering support to rebuild the experience.

  • Changes included: Consistent use of titles and verbs, standardized terminology, concise descriptions, proper grammar, a consistent voice, and a clear structure for scale

The outcome

  • It shipped! It was a big win for quality, it’s an easy screen to scan and use, and there’s now a sustainable framework for building new controls.

  • I also ensured that the new experience would be properly translated and that interactions would be logged to better understand performance.

  • This UX ended up being highlighted in Meta-wide privacy training as an example of a clear and straightforward experience.
